PRIFF Programme 2 Synopsis

INHERITANCE brings together six films about what we inherit from our families and the systems that shape our lives. Alone in an empty church, a writer sets out to sever his relationship with God, only for a childhood memory of violence to turn his accusation back on himself. Malaika prepares for her wedding while struggling to live up to the ideal bride imposed by her mother and her Kenyan heritage. Released from prison, young father Obi arrives at a Nigerian café in a spacesuit, stretching the lie that he has been in space just long enough to win over his curious daughter. In racially divided 1950s Britain, an Afro Caribbean miner struggles to find acceptance above ground. Sound recordist Dina turns to her craft to preserve the presence of her mother, a classical singer, as her health fades. And Out of the Ashes follows the organisers who, in 2020, built a fund of their own for Black and brown communities, challenging centuries of deciding who deserves help.
